Worker-owned cooperatives and other forms of employee ownership have been proven to help make the economy stronger. They help to increase access to wealth for traditionally marginalized groups. The benefits of employee ownership are the greatest when there is also a strong ownership culture present. This includes healthy communication, clear decision-making processes, trust and accountability at all levels. It is also crucial to maintain a commitment to equity and inclusion, and to make investments in day-to-day practices that help sustain all of these things. A growing body of research shows that democratic management can also help 501(c)3 nonprofits to be more effective and resilient.
